A former Governor of Ogun State and senator, Ibikunle Amosun, has condemned the renewed violence in Plateau State, describing the killings as senseless and a tragic setback to Nigeria’s quest for unity and peaceful coexistence.
Amosun also decried the activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and Lakurawa in Nigeria, and ISIS and Al-Qaeda abroad, insisting that their actions grossly misrepresent the true teachings of Islam.
He made the remarks on Saturday while delivering a speech during a merit award ceremony at the 11th Triennial National Conference and 101st Anniversary of the
Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
“Islam, through faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage, advocates mutual understanding and tolerance,” Amosun said. “Unfortunately, hatred now reigns where religion should bring
peace.”
He noted that pluralism—diversity of faiths and tribes—should serve as a platform for unity, not division, adding that no tribe or religion should be considered superior to another.
“The killings in Plateau and other parts of the country over ethnic or land border disputes are needless,” he said.
“If we truly respect humanity, our differences should be our strength, not a reason for violence.”
The former governor bemoaned the global image crisis facing Muslims, noting that the violent extremism of groups like ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, and Lakurawa has “put Islam and Muslims on trial.”
Amosun challenged Muslims to reclaim the narrative by embodying the core values of Islam—peace, harmony, and equity.
“We must correct the false image created by these extremists and show through our deeds that Islam is a religion of compassion and justice,” he stated.
He urged religious and community leaders to deepen interfaith dialogue and foster a culture of peaceful coexistence, particularly among the youth.
Also speaking, the National Missioner of the Ansar-ud-Deen Society, Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Ahmad, called on Muslims to uphold justice and accountability.
“Society is made of individuals. When individuals are upright, society flourishes. Islam calls for transparency and responsibility, knowing that everyone will account for their actions in the hereafter,” Ahmad said.
Amosun congratulated recipients of the Ansar-ud-Deen merit awards and encouraged them to continue promoting peace, mutual respect, and national development.
