A member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, representing Barkin Ladi Constituency, Dickson Chollom, has insisted that the perpetrators of recent deadly attacks in the state are no longer unknown, calling for transparency and decisive action from security agencies.
Chollom made the declaration during a sympathy and fact-finding visit to Heipang District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, following a violent attack that claimed three lives and left another victim critically injured.
The victims were identified as Marvin Choji (23), Bitrus Choji (24), and Daniel Dung (59), while Stephen Davou (48) is currently receiving treatment for severe injuries sustained in the attack.
According to a statement issued by his Senior Strategic Media and Communication Adviser, George Lambert, the lawmaker disclosed that security operatives had arrested one of the suspects, who allegedly made confessional statements revealing the identities of his accomplices.
“We will no longer accept the term ‘unknown gunmen’. One of the perpetrators has been arrested and he has made confessions about those who joined him in carrying out this heinous attack,” Chollom said.
The lawmaker stressed that the recurring violence in Barkin Ladi and other parts of Plateau State must not be treated as routine criminality, but as a serious threat requiring urgent and transparent intervention.
He called on security agencies to publicly disclose details of the investigation, including the identities of the arrested suspect(s), their accomplices, and places of detention, arguing that such openness would reassure residents and strengthen public confidence.
Chollom also urged the Plateau State Commissioner of Justice to take charge of the case and ensure the diligent prosecution of all suspects involved.
“This is not business as usual. The people deserve to know the truth, and those responsible must face the full weight of the law,” he stated.
Commending the swift response of the security agencies, the lawmaker praised the Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, CP Bassey Ewah, for promptly visiting the scene and mobilising reinforcements, with support from neighbouring Nasarawa State, to restore calm in the troubled community.
During his visit, Chollom held a closed-door meeting with community leaders, youth representatives, and traditional elders in Heipang, where discussions centred on strengthening local security structures and enhancing collaboration between residents and security agencies.
He assured the community that their concerns would be escalated to relevant authorities at the highest levels, pledging that those behind the attacks would be tracked down and brought to justice.
The latest attack adds to growing concerns over recurring violence in Plateau State, with residents and stakeholders increasingly demanding stronger security measures and accountability from authorities.
