Residents of Jenta Adamu in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Friday morning, set ablaze suspected cult members who had invaded their community.
The incident, which has sparked widespread discussions on security and mob justice, occurred when the alleged cultists attempted to rob residents of their belongings.
Witnesses say the attack ignited an immediate response from enraged community members, who pursued the suspects and took justice into their own hands.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, detailed the events in a statement.
“At approximately 09:20 am, a concerned citizen from Jenta Adamu made a distress call reporting that a group of unidentified cult members had invaded their community, attempting to rob law-abiding citizens,” Alabo disclosed.
Akano said the Police Commissioner of Plateau State, upon receiving the report, instructed officers from “A” Division Jos to respond swiftly.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that however, by the time law enforcement agents arrived at the scene, the situation had escalated beyond control.
“Upon arrival, the police team discovered that an angry mob had intercepted the invaders, overpowered them, and set their bodies ablaze,” the PPRO stated.
Local authorities, in collaboration with the leadership of Jos North Local Government Area, later moved to restore order by evacuating the charred remains of the deceased to a hospital morgue.
Further investigations at the scene revealed two locally fabricated pistols, believed to have been in the possession of the alleged cult members.
Alabo said these weapons have been recovered as evidence in the ongoing probe into the incident.
Residents of Jenta Adamu have reportedly been grappling with sporadic attacks and robberies, fueling anger and a sense of helplessness.
In response, the Plateau State Police Command has appealed for calm, urging citizens to avoid taking the law into their hands.
“While we understand the frustrations of the people, mob justice is not a lawful solution. It undermines the rule of law and can lead to tragic consequences,” Alabo emphasized.
The Command assured residents of its commitment to intensifying patrols, enhancing community policing, and bringing perpetrators of crime to justice.
