In a significant development, the Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, highlighted the cautious approach taken by the police authorities when appointing Commissioners of Police (CPs) to Oyo State.
This measure comes as a response to the distinct security challenges prevalent in the region. Egbetokun made this revelation during his recent visit to the Alarere residence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, situated in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
Addressing the situation, Egbetokun emphasized, “We are always conscious of who to post here as the CP, and we don’t just send anybody here.
We look out for who can provide effective policing to the state, and we appreciate our father, the Olubadan, and his Council for the unwavering support they have provided us.”
Furthermore, the Inspector General elaborated on the strategic importance of Oyo State in terms of security, noting its location, historical context, and the imperative for the Force to meticulously choose officers to lead the state command.
He expressed his dedication to a new vision for the Force that is service-oriented, compliant with the rule of law, community-friendly, and committed to swift responses to criminal incidents, all aimed at enhancing community safety and advancing the Force’s capabilities.
In this pursuit of their new vision, Egbetokun underscored the indispensable role of traditional rulers.
He sought the understanding and support of the Olubadan, recognizing that their collaboration is essential for achieving the shared objective of securing and safeguarding Nigeria.
During his visit to the palace, which marked the first of its kind in the South-West region, the police chief expressed gratitude for the support and cooperation that the state Command has received thus far. Egbetokun called for a continuation of this positive collaboration, underscoring the alignment of the new community policing approach with the traditional institution’s authority and proximity to the people.
In response, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Balogun, through his representative ‘Baba Kekere’, Sen Kola Balogun, commended IGP Egbetokun’s commitment to community policing, viewing it as a pivotal solution to the nation’s security challenges.
He acknowledged that while Oyo State is relatively peaceful, pockets of security challenges exist.
He lauded the CP for his efforts in addressing them since his appointment, expressing the commitment of the palace and its members to offer unwavering support to the Command’s mission of safeguarding lives and property.
Oba Balogun acknowledged the remarkable journey of Egbetokun’s career, highlighting his resilience and eventual attainment of the pinnacle position of Inspector General of Police despite facing various challenges.
He conveyed his blessings and confidence in Egbetokun’s continued success in his current role.
The visit was attended by prominent members of the Olubadan Advisory Council and Mogajis, underscoring the unified effort towards ensuring security and stability within the region.
