In a significant breakthrough, the Ogun State Police Command, led by Commissioner Abiodun Alamutu, has apprehended five suspects connected to recent robbery attacks, including the tragic incident at Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade.
The law enforcement team successfully recovered two stolen Lexus cars, underscoring their commitment to tackling criminal activities in the state.
Commissioner Alamutu revealed these developments during a briefing on Wednesday, shedding light on the security situation across Ogun State.
The arrests come in the wake of armed robbers invading Ipara, Isara, and Ode Remo communities, targeting students at Gateway Polytechnic and resulting in fatalities.
Detailing the operation, Alamutu explained that the Remo North Division received a distress call on December 2, 2023, alerting them to armed robbers wreaking havoc in the community.
The Divisional Police Officer promptly led a response team, engaging in a gunfire exchange with the criminals.
Tragically, four students walking along the road became victims of the armed robbery, with one succumbing to gunshot wounds on the way to the hospital.
However, swift police action led to the recovery of a stolen Lexus car in Abeokuta, and another snatched vehicle in the Ajuwon area was also retrieved.
The Commissioner highlighted the success of intelligence gathering, resulting in the arrest of several gang members. One individual, attempting to escape into the bush, was eventually apprehended with the assistance of local residents.
Presently, eight police patrol teams are actively operating in the area, reinforcing the commitment to maintaining security and preventing further criminal activities.
