The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old man, Ademola Joshua, over the alleged sexual abuse and impregnation of a minor, triggering fresh outrage over sexual and gender-based violence in the state.
The suspect was taken into custody following a report lodged on January 4 by a man identified as Adewale of Ilara-Mokin, who accused Joshua of engaging in unlawful sexual activities with his niece.
Confirming the arrest in a statement on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said preliminary investigations revealed that the alleged crime came to light after inquiries were made into the cause of the minor’s pregnancy.
Jimoh said the case had been immediately transferred to the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) unit of the command for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
“Upon receipt of this disturbing report, the matter was promptly referred to the GBV unit for thorough investigation,” the spokesperson stated.
He added that the suspect remains in police custody and would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
Reiterating the command’s stance against sexual crimes, Jimoh stressed that the Ondo State Police Command was committed to protecting the rights and dignity of women and children, warning that perpetrators would not be shielded from the law.
“The police will ensure that offenders involved in sexual and gender-based violence face the full weight of the law without compromise,” he said.
According to him, the arrest aligns with the reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, particularly in strengthening gender-sensitive policing and improving responses to sexual and gender-based violence across the country.
Jimoh further commended members of the public for their timely and courageous reporting of the incident, urging residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible information to aid swift police intervention and enhance community safety.
The case adds to growing concerns over the prevalence of sexual abuse involving minors and relatives, with rights groups repeatedly calling for stricter enforcement of laws and faster prosecution of offenders.
