The Niger State Police Command have arrested four suspected armed robbers reported to be making life unbearable for the residents of Kpellegi-Shafini in the Mashegu Local Government Area of the state.
Shehu Lawali, 25; Malali Mohammed, 26; Yarima Abubakar, 35; and Hussai ldris, 35, all from Kabiu Tunga Ayaba, Mashegu, were reportedly spotted on January 22, 2019, trying to escape from a crime scene.
It was gathered that police operatives from the Ibbi Division in Mashegu, on getting the information that unknown armed robbers numbering about seven had blocked the Kpellegi-Shafini Road, swung into action and engaged the hoodlums in a gunfight before apprehending the suspects.
Northern City News gathered on Thursday that the suspects had been dispossessing residents of the area of their valuables for some time.
One of the suspects, Idris, told our correspondent that he and his gang members normally dispossessed people of their valuables, especially on market days on the Kpellegi-Shafini Road.
“We rob women returning from the market but our move that day was frustrated by a team of policemen, who arrested us,” he stated.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, said operatives were on the trail of other fleeing suspects.
Abubakar also said the operatives recovered from the suspects one AK-47 rifle, two locally-made pistols and three machetes, adding that the matter had been charged to court.
