Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Investigation Unit have apprehended four suspects for their alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy, forgery of official documents, job racketeering, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretenses.
The arrest, announced in a statement on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, followed a complaint lodged by the office of the Special Assistant to the President.
The suspects were accused of forging documents resembling those purportedly issued by the office of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the State House in Abuja.
The suspects, identified as Khuzaifa Tafida, Zakari Abdullahi, Abdullahi Baba, and Adeyemo Morufu, were alleged to be part of a syndicate that specializes in forging classified government documents to deceive unsuspecting victims and extort money under the guise of securing jobs for them in prestigious government institutions.
According to ACP Adejobi, the syndicate had presented forged documents to the office of the Inspector-General of Police, recommending 13 individuals for the Nigeria Police Academy 2022 Special Recruitment.
Upon suspicion, and following a petition from the presidential aide’s office, an investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of Tafida and Abdullahi.
Further inquiries resulted in the apprehension of the remaining suspects.
“Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to their roles in the crime,” Adejobi disclosed.
“They admitted to forging documents from several government offices to defraud unsuspecting victims, promising them enlistment and jobs at various federal agencies.”
Recovered items from the suspects included forged classified documents, official stamps, and the sum of N1.7 million, among other incriminating materials.
The police urged members of the public to exercise caution and avoid engaging with individuals promising employment opportunities outside established procedures.
“With this new trend, members of the public are advised to be wary of such fraudulent elements,” Adejobi warned.
The suspects remain in custody as further investigations continue.
