The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a health practitioner over an alleged illegal abortion that led to the death of a 35-year-old woman in Ikot Obio Odung, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday in Uyo.
According to her, the victim’s mother reported that her daughter, who worked at the Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odung, died on Tuesday night during an abortion allegedly carried out by the suspect.
John explained that detectives were alerted after neighbours claimed the suspect attempted to secretly dump the woman’s body in her room but fled when confronted.
“Upon arrival, police operatives observed a premature foetus emerging from the victim’s private part. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased died as a result of complications from an illegal abortion performed by the suspect,” she said.
The suspect, identified as a resident of Afaha Offiong in Nsit Ibom, reportedly owns the Full Life Medical Centre but is neither a licensed doctor nor a nurse. Police findings revealed that he operated as a community health practitioner and allegedly used the facility to carry out illegal medical procedures.
John added that the facility had since been deserted while the deceased’s body was deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
She assured that the police had intensified investigations and would prosecute the suspect accordingly.
