In a significant breakthrough, the Rivers State Police Command has apprehended a juju priest, identified as Ugochukwu Onuigbo, along with 25 other individuals suspected of being part of a car-snatching syndicate operating within the state.
The suspects were paraded on Wednesday at the Command Headquarters on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt, where the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, provided details of their arrest.
According to Disu, the arrests came after a concerted effort by the tactical team and investigators, following a noticeable surge in car theft and robbery incidents in the area.
He revealed that investigations uncovered a sophisticated operation, with stolen vehicles often being transported to Kano and Anambra, where they were dismantled and sold as scrap.
Among the arrested individuals, Chidozie Anthony Onyekwe was highlighted as the ringleader responsible for orchestrating car theft operations in Rivers State.
Disu emphasized Onyekwe’s extensive network and training of operatives in car theft activities.
Additionally, Kelechi Igwe, another key figure among the suspects, was described as an expert in removing vehicle trackers, essential for evading detection after theft. Disu noted Igwe’s pivotal role in facilitating the disposal of stolen vehicles.
The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the arrests, citing the significant impact on curbing car theft in the region.
He commended the efforts of the police force in dismantling the syndicate and assured the public of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in Rivers State.
