The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, aged 32, in connection with the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga, aged 39, and the subsequent theft of her mobile phone.

The incident, which occurred in February 2025, sent shockwaves through the community of Uyo, where Effanga was found lifeless in her apartment, bearing visible signs of violence on her face and neck.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, Nelson was traced to a local church following extensive intelligence operations.

“Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered clear indications of a violent struggle resulting in Effanga’s tragic demise,” John disclosed to journalists on Monday.

Effanga’s body was promptly conveyed to the hospital, where medical staff confirmed her death before transferring her to the morgue for preservation and autopsy procedures.

Investigations unveiled Nelson as the last person seen with Effanga on the morning of February 6, coincidentally his birthday.

Police operatives swiftly apprehended him at the church in Uyo, where he had sought refuge in an attempt to evade justice.

During interrogation, Nelson reportedly confessed to the crime, revealing that a dispute had erupted when he requested to use Effanga’s mobile phone to capture birthday memories.

“When she declined my request, a physical altercation ensued,” Nelson admitted.

He detailed how he overpowered Effanga, strangling her with his bare hands and assaulting her until she lost consciousness, subsequently fleeing the scene with her phone.

Upon his arrest, law enforcement officers recovered the stolen phone, identified as a 1-Tel Super Phone, from Nelson’s possession.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Effanga’s death resulted from strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head.

Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, condemned the heinous act, emphasizing the commitment of the police force to ensuring justice for the deceased.

“This tragic incident underscores the need for vigilance against domestic violence and criminal activities,” CP Azare asserted, urging residents to report any suspicious behavior promptly.

Nelson is slated to face charges in court as the Akwa Ibom State Police Command continues its investigation into this disturbing case of domestic violence turned deadly.
