The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly assaulting his mother and unlawfully possessing a firearm in Kano.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the suspect was arrested following a distress call received by operatives of the Panshekara Police Division on Sunday evening.
According to the police, officers who responded to the call at about 7.30pm discovered that the suspect was physically attacking his mother at their residence in the Panshekara area of the metropolis.
Kiyawa said the suspect fled the scene on sighting the police, but his mother handed over a Beretta pistol and eight rounds of ammunition allegedly recovered from her son’s bag.
“The woman stated that she found the firearm and ammunition in her son’s bag and refused to release them to him, which reportedly triggered the violent assault on her,” the statement read.
The police spokesperson added that the woman also expressed concern over what she described as her son’s sudden change in behaviour after returning from a New Year celebration.
He noted that the suspect was later tracked and arrested and is currently in police custody, where investigations are ongoing.
Commending the woman for her courage, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, described her action as exemplary and urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant about the activities of their children.
“The actions of this mother are commendable. Parents must closely monitor their wards and promptly report suspicious behaviour to security agencies,” Bakori said.
The command further urged residents to remain security-conscious and report suspicious movements to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
