Tensions flared in Aku, within the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, as a clash between two warring Odo Masquerade factions turned violent.
The Enugu State Police Command swiftly responded, announcing the arrest of an individual found in possession of a firearm amidst the chaos.
According to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, the confrontation resulted in the tragic death of one man during the incident on Monday.
Additionally, multiple injuries were reported, including those sustained by police operatives dispatched to the scene to restore order.
The conflict, rooted in a dispute over the scheduling of the festival, escalated rapidly, leading to the intervention of law enforcement.
Despite the grim turn of events, the police’s prompt actions managed to reestablish calm in the area.
Ndukwe confirmed, “In connection with the clash between rival groups in the Aku community of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area over the celebration of Odo Masquerade festival on August 28, 2023, around 4pm, one male suspect has been apprehended.
A firearm was seized from the individual, who is believed to have played a role in the violent altercation.
The incident tragically resulted in the shooting death of one male victim and caused injuries to several others, including our own police personnel who were deployed to quell the situation.”
The Enugu State Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation into the root causes of the clash, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety and harmony of the community.
