A self-acclaimed prophet, identified as Ajayi Oluwatoyin, has been arrested by operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command for allegedly raping a 20-year-old 100-level student of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti.
The State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the weekend in Ado-Ekiti, noting that the suspect was apprehended in Iworoko-Ekiti after allegedly luring and violating the undergraduate.
Eribo described the incident as “a sad reminder of the growing trend of sexual violence by people who exploit religion for evil,” stressing that the command would ensure the case is thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
“At Iworoko-Ekiti, a self-acclaimed prophet, Ajayi Oluwatoyin, was arrested for raping a 20-year-old 100-level student of Ekiti State University,” Eribo said.
“The arrest is part of our renewed effort to rid the state of criminal elements and restore confidence in the safety of residents.”
The police commissioner, who also paraded other suspects arrested for various crimes, said the command was intensifying its crackdown on cultism, armed robbery, and sexual assault across the state.
Among those arrested were Bolaji Kazeem and Isa Sikirulahi, who were caught with a locally-made pistol loaded with a live cartridge and a battle axe while riding a TVS NEO motorcycle around the Isato area of Ado-Ekiti. Another stolen motorcycle was later recovered from their hideout at Omisanjana, he added.
Similarly, Abolaji Rasheed, popularly known as B.J., from Owena in Osun State, was apprehended while attempting to steal a motorcycle along Igbara Odo Road, Ogotun-Ekiti, as his accomplices fled.
In another operation, two suspects, Mohammed Jamiu and Ahmed, were arrested for stealing a Toyota Cabster vehicle parked by its owner at the Tipper Garage, Ijigbo area of Ado-Ekiti.
The command also confirmed the arrest of Ajetomobi Ayomide in Aramoko-Ekiti for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl multiple times and threatening to kill her if she exposed the crime.
CP Eribo vowed that all the suspects would face prosecution, assuring that the police would continue to collaborate with residents to track down criminals and make Ekiti State unsafe for offenders.
“We are determined to bring all offenders to justice and protect our communities from sexual predators and armed criminals,” he said.
