In a bid to curb the rising loss of firearms to hoodlums, the Nigeria Police Force has launched a monthly audit of its arms and ammunition.
This directive, conveyed via a wireless message from Force Headquarters in Abuja, tasks all state police commands with strict compliance and holds supervising officers accountable for any missing firearms.
The police expressed dismay over the increasing loss of firearms, attributing the issue to negligence, poor weapon-handling skills, and insensitive deployment of personnel by senior officers.
These factors, according to the memo obtained on Thursday, have left officers vulnerable to attacks and unable to respond effectively to threats.
The memo stated, “It has been observed with dismay, the disturbing incidents of avoidable loss of firearms to hoodlums.
This has been found traceable to negligence on the part of the men, poor knowledge of weapon handling, insensitive deployment of men by senior officers.”
The document further highlighted how the deficiencies in training and deployment have exposed officers to frequent attacks, compromising their ability to protect citizens.
To address the situation, the directive called for urgent measures, including comprehensive training on firearm handling.
It emphasized that any future losses of firearms would not be tolerated, and supervising officers would be held responsible for such lapses.
The message read, “You are to immediately design and embark on aggressive training on musket firearm handling. Supervising officers will be held responsible for any loss of firearms.”
Additionally, police commands were instructed to furnish the Force Headquarters with monthly reports on the status of arms and ammunition by the 23rd of every month.
