The Nigeria Police Force has commenced a nationwide process to recruit retired officers as ad-hoc instructors for the training of new constables across its colleges and training schools.
The move, which marks one of the most extensive recalls of retired personnel in recent years, was contained in a wireless message dated December 8, 2025, issued by the Department of Training and Development (DTD) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The directive, quoted by a news media outlet was dispatched to all Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General in charge of the 17 zonal commands, Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and FCT, and heads of specialised formations including MOPOL, the Terrorism Directorate, Marine, Airwing, Medical, Force Intelligence, Force CID, Border Patrol, among others.
According to the document, the Inspector-General of Police ordered all commands and formations to immediately liaise with personnel officers and forward the names of qualified retired officers willing to serve as temporary instructors.
The engagement is strictly open to officers who retired between 2020 and 2025, and only those who left the service from the rank of Inspector to Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).
The wireless message emphasised that eligible candidates must be “well grounded” in the Police Act 2020, Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, and other operational regulations, while also possessing demonstrable expertise in at least one of the following areas:
drill, musketry, unarmed combat, professional studies, legal studies or liberal studies.
The retired officers, according to the directive, will serve as ad-hoc staff in police training institutions, supporting the training of prospective constables as the Force pushes to improve manpower quality and operational readiness.
Commands are required to compile detailed biodata for each nominee, including serial number, full name, highest academic qualification, date of retirement, last command or formation served, area of training competence and preferred training institution for deployment.
The memo, marked “immediate” and “very important”, directed that all submissions be forwarded to the designated email address on or before December 18, 2025.
Security analysts say the move may be aimed at bridging manpower gaps in training institutions and ensuring recruits benefit from the experience of seasoned officers amid ongoing reforms in the policing architecture.
The Force Headquarters has yet to issue a public statement on the development.
