The Police Command in Rivers State has reported the arrest of a group involved in child trafficking, consisting of three women who were operating both within and outside of the state.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the arrest was made in response to a report from a woman in Ubima Community, in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, who had reported her child missing.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, made this announcement in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday and sent to journalists.
Iringe-Koko explained that the prime suspect was apprehended by the commissioner of the police monitoring unit, who had been investigating the case, and who had discovered that the suspect had visited the complainant a few days before the child went missing.
“Following up on a complaint by Ms. Precious Friday of Ubima Community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State that her child was missing, Operatives of the Commissioner of Police Monitoring Unit swang into action.
“They arrested one Mercy Enyindah, who incidentally was said to have visited the complainant’s home shortly before the disappearance of the child.
“The arrest of Mercy Enyindah, who has confessed to having stolen the child and two other children, along with her accomplice, one Amaka Ewuzie between the weeks of February 16th and March 2023, has led to the arrest of one Chialuka Iheanacho (f) and her husband, Chukwuma Iheanacho in Delta State.
“Other members of the gang said to be in Imo State are still being trailed.” the statement reads in part
Iringe-Koko noted that some of the children who were rescued have been reunited with their parents, but they are still trying to rescue a two-year-old boy named Jasper Friday who was sold in Asaba, Delta State.
The PPRO pleaded for help from anyone who has information that could lead to the rescue of the child, urging residents of the state to be careful about letting strangers near their children.
She advised that If anyone suspects any suspicious behavior, they should immediately contact the police emergency numbers that were released by the command.
The police equally announced that they will quickly bring the suspects to court.
