A police constable serving with the Borno State Command, Mohammed Alhaji Muhammad, has returned N2.6m that was mistakenly transferred into his bank account, in a move that has drawn commendation from residents and police authorities.
The command’s spokesperson, Nahum Daso, confirmed the development on Monday, saying the officer acted promptly after discovering the unexpected credit alert.
Daso explained that Muhammad, who works in the insurance unit of the command, received the alert last Thursday but immediately realised he was not expecting any funds.
He reportedly sought permission the following morning to visit his bank, where he lodged a formal complaint and requested that the money be traced and returned to its rightful owner.
“The constable said he knew instantly the money was not his. On Friday morning, he went straight to his bank to report the error and insisted that due process be followed to refund the sender,” Daso said.
The incident gained public attention after a Facebook user, Bello Jafar, praised Muhammad for what he described as a rare display of honesty within public service.
Jafar disclosed that the funds were mistakenly sent by a Moniepoint customer and that the officer took immediate steps to reverse the transaction.
Confirming the gesture, Muhammad said he was motivated by a desire to promote integrity and counter negative perceptions about the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Naziru Abdulmajeed, has since invited the constable for a meeting, during which he commended him for his conduct and urged other officers to emulate the example.
The police command described the act as a reflection of professionalism and discipline, noting that it reinforced public confidence in the force at a time when trust in institutions remains critical.
