The Nigeria Police Force has warned that the activities of 130 suspected cybercriminals — including 113 Chinese and Malaysian nationals and 17 Nigerian accomplices — posed a grave threat to the country’s national security and economic stability
The Force disclosed that 21 of the suspects have already been convicted for large-scale internet fraud, hacking, and other cybercrimes, following a sweeping operation in the Federal Capital Territory in November 2024.
Police spokesman, Deputy Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a Sunday statement that the convictions followed “meticulous and painstaking investigations” backed by robust digital forensic evidence and expert testimony.
“These suspects were implicated in activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s national security and economic stability,” Adejobi stated.
“The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed that the Force will not allow Nigeria to become a safe haven for cybercriminal enterprises.”
Operatives had, on November 3, 2024, acting on intelligence, raided a property in the Jahi area of Abuja, arresting all 130 suspects as part of a broader cybercrime crackdown. They were arraigned on December 2, 2024.
According to Adejobi, 21 have now been sentenced by a competent court, while prosecution of the remaining defendants continues in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice. He, however, did not disclose the length or terms of the sentences.
The police assured that they would continue deploying cutting-edge technology, deepening international cooperation, and intensifying investigations to dismantle organised cybercrime rings.
“This conviction sends a strong message to both local and international cybercriminal networks,” Adejobi added, pledging to provide further updates as trials progress.
