The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver who conveyed former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, in the vehicle involved in a road accident that claimed two lives.
The command said the driver of the Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle is currently in police custody as part of ongoing investigations into the fatal incident, which occurred on December 29, 2025.
Confirming the development in a brief statement on Thursday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the arrest was to aid a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi stated.
Although the police did not disclose the identity of the driver as of press time, sources said the arrest was aimed at establishing the cause of the accident and determining possible culpability.
PLATFORM TIMES recalls that the accident led to the death of two of Joshua’s close associates, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, while the boxing star sustained injuries and was hospitalised.
Joshua was later discharged from hospital on Wednesday after being certified clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. A joint statement by the Lagos and Ogun state governments noted that the boxer was “heavy-hearted and full of emotions” over the loss of his friends.
The statement, signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Ogun State government disclosed that Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday afternoon to pay their last respects as arrangements were made to repatriate the remains of the deceased.
The two state governments expressed condolences to the bereaved families, praying for the repose of the souls of the departed and strength for their loved ones to bear the loss.
They also appreciated the outpouring of public sympathy and acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as “fatherly” throughout the period.
In addition, the governments commended medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality of care in attending to Joshua and others injured in the crash.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
