Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has made a startling revelation that his younger sister, Atsi Kefas, was not killed by bandits as widely believed, but was tragically gunned down by a police escort attached to his mother’s convoy.
Speaking with journalists on Friday in Jalingo, the state capital, Governor Kefas disclosed that fresh findings from an investigation into the incident confirmed that a police officer fired the fatal shot that killed his sister at close range while she was en route from Jalingo to Abuja in 2024.
“For the first time, I want to publicly clarify the circumstances surrounding my sister’s death,” Kefas said solemnly. “It was not bandits, as earlier suspected.
It was a police escort in the same vehicle with her who shot her at close range. This was confirmed during investigations and a medical operation that found gun pellets in her body.”
The tragic incident occurred along the Wukari-Chinkai Road, a route notorious for criminal attacks. Initially, there were widespread speculations that the convoy had been ambushed by kidnappers targeting the governor’s family.
Kefas, who led journalists in observing a minute of silence in honour of Atsi and over 50 people recently killed in the Karim-Lamido crisis, expressed deep sorrow over the rising wave of violence in the state.
He emphasized the sanctity of human life and vowed to pursue justice for his late sister.
“Life is sacred. You don’t take a person’s life and expect God to bless you,” he said.
“The officer who pulled the trigger is still under investigation. We will ensure that justice is done.”
The governor further announced that a commission of inquiry would soon be constituted to unravel the causes of the ongoing conflict in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area and recommend lasting solutions.
He lamented that communities that ought to be coexisting peacefully were instead locked in deadly disputes, resulting in needless bloodshed and underdevelopment.
