The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police inspector identified as Obic Modestus after a disturbing video showing him assaulting an Uber driver surfaced online, sparking widespread outrage.

The video, which has gone viral across social media platforms, captured Inspector Modestus slapping the Uber driver repeatedly while leaning into the vehicle from the front passenger seat.

The officer was also heard yelling, “Are you mad?” as he struck the driver before forcefully dragging him out of the car.

The assault did not end there, as the officer led the driver towards a nearby police van, where other policemen joined in harassing the victim.

Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the erring officer had been identified and summoned by the Command’s Complaint Response Unit.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Hundeyin wrote: “The Police Officer, Inspector Obic Modestus, has been summoned by the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) @LagosPoliceNG.

He will be handed over to the Provost Department for appropriate disciplinary measures.”

Hundeyin added that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on unprofessional conduct.

“The Lagos State Police Command, under CP Olohundare Jimoh, will not condone any form of incivility to members of the public,” he said.

The incident has reignited public calls for urgent police reforms and stricter disciplinary action against erring officers.

Many Nigerians expressed outrage on social media, describing the attack as yet another example of unchecked brutality within the police force.

As of the time of this report, further updates on the disciplinary process against Inspector Modestus are being awaited.
