In a recent strategic security meeting in Abuja, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun announced that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has successfully received and traced 172 kidnapping cases within the past seven weeks.
The meeting, attended by senior police officers of deputy commissioner rank and above, aimed to address the rising insecurity in the country.
IGP Egbetokun highlighted substantial progress since the previous meeting in December 2023.
Notably, the launch of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has yielded positive results in combating various crimes, including kidnapping.
The collective dedication, resilience, and tenacity of the Force were emphasized as crucial factors in achieving these positive outcomes and ensuring a safer environment for citizens.
Over the seven-week period following the last conference, the NPF made significant strides in curbing crime rates nationwide.
The Inspector-General reported 35 cases of terrorism/secessionist attacks, 302 cases of murder, 111 cases of armed robbery, 172 cases of kidnapping, 67 cases of banditry, and 15 cases of unlawful possession of firearms.
Executing strategies formulated at the previous conference, the Nigeria Police Force successfully arrested 814 suspects involved in various crimes.
Furthermore, 107 kidnap victims were rescued, and law enforcement recovered 166 firearms, 1,074 ammunition, and 41 vehicles.
These achievements were attributed to a strategic blend of proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and community engagements as advocated by the Force leadership.
