The Police Service Commission (PSC) has warned that any senior police officer who fails promotional examinations three consecutive times will be compulsorily retired from service.
The Commission, in a statement after the conduct of the latest promotion examinations at its headquarters in Abuja, said the measure is part of efforts to entrench merit, professionalism, and competence in the Nigeria Police Force.
The test, held at the Solomon Arase Conference Hall, had 30 senior officers in attendance, including an Assistant Inspector General of Police, two Commissioners of Police, 11 Deputy Commissioners of Police, and 16 Assistant Commissioners of Police.
PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashimu Argungu, said the decision was taken to reposition the Force for modern policing challenges.
He stated, “Any officer who fails the examination three times will be retired at that level for obvious incompetence. Although the promotion examination is coming late in the day, it is a good development expected to restore the dignity of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Argungu stressed that the global security environment is rapidly changing, hence the need for police officers to upgrade their skills and competence to remain relevant in crime prevention and law enforcement.
The PSC boss further assured that due diligence would be followed in the conduct of the exercise, saying cases of promoting dead or already retired officers would no longer be tolerated.
The exercise was witnessed by eminent Nigerians, including retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, retired Justice Christine Ladi Dabup, retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu, retired DIG Uba Bala Ringim, and Alhaji Abdulfatah Mohammed.
The Commission maintained that the new policy will ensure that only officers who are competent, capable, and ready for the demands of contemporary policing rise through the ranks.
