The Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos has launched an investigation into Oba Sefiu Olawale Adeyeri, the Aseyin of Iseyin, following allegations that his official vehicle fatally struck a Nigerian Legion officer, Jeremiah Edet, during an alleged invasion of a disputed property in Iseyin, Oyo State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on March 18, 2025, has sparked controversy, with the deceased’s family accusing the monarch and Oyo State police of attempting to cover up the circumstances surrounding the death.
Sources revealed that the monarch, accompanied by thugs, allegedly stormed the property, which was under the watch of Edet and another legion officer.
In the ensuing chaos, the king’s vehicle purportedly struck Edet as he attempted to leave the scene.
Instead of providing medical aid, the monarch’s entourage allegedly abandoned him by the roadside.
Edet was later rushed to Bowen University Teaching Hospital by his colleague but succumbed to his injuries on March 23, 2025.
Following his death, the monarch allegedly offered N300,000 to the family as compensation—an offer that was rejected.
The family claims no further support was provided for the burial arrangements.
Dissatisfied with the response from the Oyo State Police Command, Edet’s family submitted a petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, demanding a thorough investigation and prosecution of the monarch and his driver, Jelili Aderounmu.
The petition, titled “Petition for the Transfer, Investigation, and Prosecution of the Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Abdulsefiu David Olawale Oyebola Adeyeri III, and Jelili Shittu Olona Aderounmu for the Murder of Jeremiah Daniel Edet (Rev. Fada) of the Nigerian Legion (Deceased Victim),” alleges that Edet’s killing was premeditated.
According to the document, Edet was assigned to guard a project site in Olasupo Village and was on his way to charge his mobile phone when he was hit by the monarch’s vehicle.
The petition further claims that the Oyo police refused to allow the family access to the suspect or the vehicle involved, raising suspicions of an attempted cover-up.
The family has urged law enforcement authorities to transfer the case from Oyo State to Lagos, citing bias and undue influence from the monarch.
They claim the driver was initially arrested but later released without facing charges.
Efforts to reach the Aseyin’s spokesperson, Prince Ismail Adeyeri, were unsuccessful.
