The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a teenage boy at the swimming pool of the University of Ibadan, with early findings suggesting possible foul play.
The yet-to-be-identified victim, believed to be between 14 and 15 years old, was reportedly found floating in the pool under unclear circumstances, triggering panic within the university community.
Witnesses said the incident was discovered when bystanders noticed the boy’s lifeless body in the pool and promptly alerted authorities, leading to the swift arrival of police operatives at the scene.
Preliminary observations by investigators indicated signs of violence, raising suspicion that the teenager may have been attacked before his death.
Sources disclosed that the body bore visible bruises, while traces of blood were reportedly found in and around the pool area, further deepening concerns over a possible violent encounter.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, CSP Adewale Osifeso, said the case was being treated as a suspected homicide.
He stated, “The Command has commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. At this stage, it is being treated as a suspected case of homicide.”
Osifeso added that officers who responded to the scene observed disturbing details that necessitated a comprehensive forensic and criminal probe.
“On arrival, the body of the young male was found in the pool with visible marks of violence, including bruises and blood stains around the area. These indicators necessitate a detailed investigation,” he said.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the remains of the deceased had been evacuated to the Adeoyo General Hospital mortuary in Ibadan for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
He appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could hinder ongoing investigations.
“We urge the public to refrain from speculation. The Command is committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served,” Osifeso added.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over safety at recreational facilities, particularly those accessible to minors, with residents calling for improved surveillance and stricter security measures.
Police authorities assured that all leads would be thoroughly pursued as investigations continue.
