The Kano State Police Command has rescued a man accused of blasphemy from being lynched by an angry mob at a hotel in the Badawa area of Kano metropolis.
The incident occurred at about 9:45 p.m. on Saturday at Sarina Hotel, Badawa Quarters, following allegations that the suspect desecrated the Holy Qur’an within the hotel premises.
Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development on Monday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, said the suspect was in the company of two others when the incident happened.
According to the account, three men identified as Musa Tasiu, Awwal Ibrahim and Soja Snu, all residents of Dorayi Quarters, had visited the hotel. It was alleged that Tasiu entered the hotel’s mosque, damaged a glass door, picked up a copy of the Holy Qur’an and tore it.
The alleged act reportedly triggered outrage among people within the hotel, who quickly gathered in large numbers and attempted to attack the suspect.
Sensing imminent danger, a police patrol team attached to the division swiftly responded to a distress call, dispersed the mob and rescued the suspect, thereby restoring calm to the area.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the suspect was currently in police custody.
“He is presently with us and will be charged to court once investigation has been completed,” Kiyawa said.
The police spokesperson also urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course, warning against taking the law into their own hands under any circumstance.
