In a significant breakthrough, the Abia State Police Command says it  has  rescued four missing children who were allegedly abducted by a new tenant on December 16.

The police command said it  has  also apprehended eight individuals in connection with the crime, as confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, in a statement issued in Umuahia.

“We are pleased to inform the public that all four missing children, stolen on December 16, 2023, have now been rescued.

“Two of the children were recovered on December 22, 2023, while the remaining two were rescued today, December 24, 2023 (Sunday),” stated the spokesperson.

The statement further revealed that a total of eight suspects, comprising five females and three males, are currently assisting the police in their investigation into the abduction case.

The incident was initially reported by Mrs. Ifeanyi Ibe of Ubakala Street, Ossai Road, Umuahia, who stated that her children and her neighbors’ children were taken by an unidentified tenant.

The Abia State Police Command swiftly launched an investigation into the matter, utilizing technical intelligence support from the Department of State Services (DSS) in the state.

On December 22, 2023, police detectives successfully apprehended Ifeoma Abonyi, a 35-year-old female, in Asaba, Delta State. Ifeoma Abonyi has been identified as the tenant responsible for the abduction of the four children.

Three other individuals suspected to be involved in the crime are still at large, with the police intensifying efforts to ensure their swift arrest.

An ongoing investigation aims to determine the status of six other children found in the custody of the arrested suspects.

The possibility of conducting DNA tests is being considered, as some suspects claim the children are their biological offspring.
