The Nigeria Police Force has yet to comment on the arrest and continued detention of one of its officers, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, by military intelligence authorities over an alleged plot to overthrow the Federal Government.
Ibrahim, said to be from Taraba State, was reportedly arrested in Abuja in October 2025 by operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and has since remained in custody. Security sources told Platform Times that the officer is listed as number 36 among personnel being held in connection with the investigation.
Repeated efforts to obtain official clarification from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, proved unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to his mobile phone since Tuesday were neither answered nor returned, though the messages were reportedly read.
The silence from the police hierarchy comes amid growing public concern over revelations that both military and paramilitary personnel were swept up in what intelligence authorities described as coordinated operations targeting a suspected coup network.
In October 2025, SaharaReporters had first reported the arrest of several senior and junior military officers across the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force following weeks of covert surveillance by defence intelligence operatives.
The Defence Headquarters initially dismissed the reports, insisting the arrests were unrelated to any coup plot and describing them as internal disciplinary matters.
However, in a significant shift, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, on January 26, 2026, acknowledged that allegations of plotting to overthrow the government formed part of the findings against some of the detained officers.
Those currently in military custody reportedly include a Brigadier General, two Colonels, five Lieutenant Colonels, one Wing Commander, eight Majors, a Lieutenant Commander, two Squadron Leaders, five Captains and one Lieutenant, alongside 10 non-commissioned officers comprising a Warrant Officer, five Sergeants, a Corporal and two Lance Corporals.
While one of the detained Army Captains is from Osun State and a senior Air Force officer, Squadron Leader Zuzu, is from Bayelsa State, most of the others are said to be from northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, including Nasarawa, Niger, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Kano, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara, Taraba, Yobe, Kogi, Sokoto and Adamawa.
The inclusion of a serving police inspector among those reportedly detained has further raised questions about inter-agency coordination and transparency, with observers calling for clearer communication from the Nigeria Police Force on the status, welfare and legal standing of the officer.
As of press time, neither the police nor defence authorities had released details on the charges, legal processes or timelines surrounding the ongoing detentions, fueling speculation and concern over due process in a matter touching directly on Nigeria’s democratic stability.
