The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a three-year-old boy stolen in September and dismantled a child trafficking syndicate operating across Anambra, Enugu, and Lagos states.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, confirming the arrest of six suspects connected to the crime.
Ikenga said the case was first reported on September 4, 2025, when the victim’s mother raised the alarm after discovering that her son had disappeared while in the care of a neighbour, later identified as Samuel Ibe, of Umusiome, Nkpor Uno.
“Following the report, operatives attached to the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, immediately launched a discreet investigation that led to the arrest of the prime suspect,” Ikenga stated.
According to him, Ibe confessed to selling the child and implicated his 35-year-old mother, Agatha Ejeweh, and 15-year-old brother, Ejeweh Chigozie Chidera, as accomplices in the trafficking network.
Further investigations led the police to Enugu State, where 30-year-old Angela Eze was arrested for collaborating with another suspect, Juliet Onah, to facilitate the movement of the stolen child to Lagos.
Acting on intelligence, operatives in Lagos tracked down China Cosmas, who was found with the victim. The child was safely recovered and has since been reunited with his family in good health.
All six suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for their professionalism and assured residents that the command remains relentless in its fight against child trafficking and other criminal activities.
He said, “Anambra will remain hostile to criminals. The command will continue to pursue anyone who preys on innocent citizens, no matter where they hide.”
