The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has affirmed its unwavering commitment to a nationwide protest concerning the recent surge in petrol prices and other related matters.

The NLC dismisses assertions suggesting the contrary as the machinations of “fifth columnists.”

In an official communiqué issued late on Tuesday, the NLC stated that despite its deliberations with the Federal Government, the mass demonstration remains scheduled as initially planned.

“We wish to apprise all citizens of Nigeria that following our recent dialogue with the Federal Government, wherein we sought to ensure their attentiveness to the concerns of the nation’s populace and workforce,” affirmed NLC President Joe Ajaero in the declaration.

“Nonetheless, the outcome of this discourse earlier today has not altered our intended course for tomorrow, as advocates for the interests and aspirations of Nigerian workers and citizens.

“We implore the Nigerian populace to disregard the actions of those seeking to undermine the public will. We call upon all individuals to assemble within their respective states, and wherever positioned across the nation, to give expression to this unified determination.”

The organization is demanding the rescission of what it categorizes as “anti-poor governmental policies,” encompassing the escalation in petroleum prices, educational fees, and value-added tax, among other concerns.

Meanwhile, the police have talked tough over the planned nationwide protest .

The Police have heightening security measures nationwide ahead of the forthcoming demonstration.

Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, recognizing the constitutional entitlement to peaceful protests, has urged all parties involved to ensure the rallies remain unaffected by troublemakers.

“In light of these developments, the IGP has instructed the Commissioners of Police overseeing various divisions, as well as supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to initiate constructive conversations with NLC/TUC leadership to cultivate understanding and arrive at mutual agreements concerning the planned demonstrations,” conveyed Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi in an official statement.

“A peaceful and well-coordinated approach is vital in attaining substantive resolutions and averting any manifestation of violence or disturbances to public order, should the protests endure.”
