In a brewing discontent within the Nigeria Police Force, officers are reportedly considering a protest on Monday.
The aggrieved policemen expressed frustration over the non-payment of the promised N35,000 fuel subsidy palliative announced by President Bola Tinubu.
President Tinubu’s decision to approve a provisional wage award of N35,000 for treasury-paid federal government workers came on October 1, 2023.
This move was a response to the nationwide outcry following the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
Despite the presidential announcement ensuring the palliative’s implementation from October 2023 to March 2024, some police personnel claim to have received payment for only the initial month (October).
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the affected officers, whose salary accounts are held in First Bank, Guarantee Trust Bank, and Police Microfinance Bank, expressed frustration at the lack of communication.
An anonymous officer voiced their concerns, stating, “We were paid only once, that is the first month, being October. Since then, everything has gone quiet.
No one is telling us anything, especially those whose pay points are in First Bank, GTBank, and Police Microfinance Bank.”
Amidst this uncertainty, there is a looming threat of a peaceful protest on Monday, as another officer remarked, “With this type of dead silence, we may be forced to take to the streets, possibly tomorrow, Monday, to peacefully protest against the non-release of the salary palliative as promised by the president.”
