The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning, cautioning citizens to avoid engaging in same-sex marriage activities, emphasizing its illegality in the country.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, highlighted the legal basis for this prohibition.
According to Adejobi, the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, applicable in Southern states, explicitly forbids unnatural offenses under Sections 214 to 217.
This prohibition is echoed in Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, which applies in the Northern part of the country.
Adejobi expressed concern about a recent surge in social media activities where individuals identifying as queer were openly endorsing and associating themselves with actions deemed unnatural under Nigerian laws.
He clarified that the law criminalizes acts such as having carnal knowledge against the order of nature, including acts with a person or an animal.
Additionally, Adejobi underscored that same-sex marriage is strictly prohibited in Nigeria, citing the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014.
This legislation criminalizes the solemnization, operation, and public display of same-sex marriages.
The police spokesperson emphasized the importance of understanding and adhering to these laws, warning that any violation would result in legal consequences.
He urged citizens to report suspicious activities related to unnatural offenses or same-sex marriage, providing essential information to aid law enforcement efforts.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, calling on all citizens to cooperate in the fight against such activities that are considered contrary to the country’s culture and punishable under the law.
Parents and guardians were urged to take note and support the police in combating these practices deemed inhuman.
