… Deputy PRO warns public against obstructing operations
…Says hindrance during arrest is also a crime
The Nigeria Police Force has said its officers are empowered by law to break doors, scale fences, or enter homes through rooftops when arresting uncooperative suspects.
The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Victor Isuku, stated this during an interactive session with residents at the premiere of Greatest Oath (The Rescue), a film produced by Ocean Portal in collaboration with the Police, held on Sunday in Benin, Edo State.
Isuku warned members of the public against obstructing police operations, stressing that anyone who hinders an arrest could also be taken into custody.
“The police can break down the door of an uncooperative suspect, enter his apartment through the roof, or get into his premises by scaling the fence. Don’t hinder the police from arresting a suspect, as you will also be arrested,” he said.
On the issue of phone searches, the police spokesman clarified that officers are only permitted to check mobile devices when there is reasonable suspicion of cybercrime.
“There are situations where a policeman can search your phone. If you are suspected of having committed a cybercrime, your phone will be checked.
“The police will not just stop you on the road and begin to search you, it is unethical. The Inspector-General frowns at such practice,” he added.
Isuku also reminded Nigerians that bail remains free of charge, urging citizens to carefully read bail forms before signing them.
He further appealed for public support in the area of logistics, saying officers need patrol vehicles, torches, and communication gadgets rather than monetary inducements.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive of Ocean Portal, Dickson Oviase, said the film was inspired by the #EndSARS protest, describing it as a turning point in Nigeria’s policing history.
Oviase urged Nigerians and the Police to work together to strengthen community policing, warning that society could descend into chaos if officers withdrew their services.
Also present was the Zone 5 Police Spokesman, Tijani Momoh, who commended the partnership, noting that the project highlighted the sacrifices made by officers in ensuring public safety.
