In an escalating political crisis, Rivers State is witnessing a wave of resignations within Governor Sim Fubara’s cabinet, adding further instability to the already tumultuous landscape.
The latest casualties are the Commissioner for Works, George-Kelly Alabo, and the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Inime Aguma, who both submitted their resignations on Thursday.
Alabo, in a letter addressed to Governor Fubara, cited his decision as being anchored in his conscience, personal philosophy, and professional ethics.
“I appreciate Your Excellency for the opportunity to serve my beloved Rivers State as Commissioner for Works,” he expressed.
Similarly, Aguma attributed her resignation to “personal” reasons and other pressing commitments.
“I wish Your Excellency a successful tenure and pray for best wishes in all your endeavours,” she wrote in her resignation letter.
These resignations closely follow the departure of the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof Zacchaeus Adangor, earlier in the day, who stated that his move was based “purely on personal decision.”
The political turmoil in Rivers State has been brewing amid a rift between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara.
The crisis has manifested in a divided Rivers State House of Assembly, now split into two groups, with 27 lawmakers defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier in the week.
In response to the defection, Governor Fubara took a controversial step by demolishing the Assembly complex, claiming it was unfit for use.
Subsequently, he presented the 2024 budget to the faction led by Edison Ehie at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
A court ruling had barred the Martins Amaewhule-led group, perceived allies of Wike, from utilizing the assembly.
This political turmoil traces back to an attempted impeachment of Governor Fubara by the Amaewhule-led group two months ago, which ultimately failed. Lawmakers loyal to Fubara retaliated by impeaching Amaewhule and declaring Ehie as the new speaker.
Despite previous attempts at resolution, including a meeting in Abuja with President Bola Tinubu involving Wike and Fubara, the recent spate of resignations signals a deepening crisis in Rivers State.
