The Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, has expressed readiness to partner with PR Primus Limited to expand the scope of the annual Lai Oso Scholarship Scheme aimed at supporting indigent Mass Communication students.
At a recent meeting between officials of PR Primus, an award-winning strategic communication agency, and the institution’s Mass Communication Department, modalities were discussed to make the third edition of the scholarship scheme more impactful and inclusive.
Team Lead of PR Primus, Mr. Akin Okudero, led the delegation and briefed the department on plans to raise the bar for the annual scheme instituted in honour of the late Professor Lai Oso, a revered media scholar and former Deputy Rector of the polytechnic.
Okudero appealed for the full backing of the department’s staff and students, stating that their involvement would ensure the scholarship continues to serve its purpose of supporting deserving students while preserving the legacy of the late communication icon.
In his response, the Head of Department, Dr. Wasiu Tejuoso, described the initiative as timely and worthy of the department’s full backing.
He noted that MAPOLY had turned down several partnership proposals in the past due to poor quality but reaffirmed his trust in PR Primus’ credibility and vision.
“I became a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) when Mr. Okudero was the Ogun State Chapter Chairman. So, I know the kind of standard he upholds,” Tejuoso said.
Dr. Tejuoso, who identified himself as a proud protégé of the late Prof. Oso, described the late scholar as “the root of the Mass Communication Department” at MAPOLY.
He disclosed that the department is working on a major project to immortalise the late academic through the establishment of a Lai Oso Legacy Conference Centre.
“We are deliberate about preserving his memory. We are also taking steps to educate current and future students about the great minds who have passed through this department by showcasing their pictures and works prominently,” he added.
As part of the visit, the PR Primus team was taken on a guided tour of MAPOLY Radio by its General Manager, Deacon Kunle Oluwusi.
The Lai Oso Scholarship Scheme was launched to honour the contributions of Prof. Oso to media scholarship and education in Nigeria.
The late professor died in a tragic auto crash in 2023, sending shockwaves across Nigeria’s academic and media landscapes.
