The Presidency on Sunday said Nigeria has recorded an 81 per cent reduction in terror-related deaths since 2015, attributing the development to improved counter-insurgency strategies and stronger synergy among security agencies.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Presidency said the significant decline was the outcome of intensified operations against insurgents and enhanced collaboration with communities affected by terrorism.
According to the statement, more than 13,000 terrorists were neutralised in the past year alone, while no fewer than 124,000 fighters and their family members have surrendered to Nigerian authorities.
The Presidency further disclosed that over 2.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) had returned to their ancestral homes as stability gradually returns to previously ravaged areas.
It added that the Federal Government had established a Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict to aid the rebuilding of destroyed communities and reintegrate displaced persons.
“Since 2023, the Federal Government, through enhanced inter-agency cooperation, has pursued, arrested, eliminated or successfully convicted terrorists and insurgents responsible for some of the most heinous attacks on Nigerian soil,” the statement said.
It added that between 2024 and 2025, over 124 terrorists were convicted, while others — including members of the Ansaru leadership and suspects involved in the 2022 Owo Church bombing and Yelwata (Benue) reprisal attacks — are still facing trial across various courts.
The statement also highlighted several ongoing measures to strengthen national security, including joint task force operations, improved border patrols, compensation for victims, and intelligence-sharing with regional and international allies.
“These coordinated measures underscore the government’s determination to eliminate terrorism and restore full peace and stability across Nigeria,” it added.
