… 2025 Global State Of Democracy Survey Paints Bleak Picture
Nigeria has recorded another poor outing in the 2025 Global State of Democracy survey, slipping in key areas such as rule of law, rights protection, representation and citizen participation.
The report, released on Thursday by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), ranked Nigeria 95th in representation, 97th in rights, 128th in rule of law, and 73rd in participation out of 174 countries.
According to the survey, judicial independence in Nigeria continues to weaken as executive interference undermines the impartiality of the courts.
It also identified fragile political parties, weak local democracy and poor social welfare delivery as major setbacks.
While civil liberties, political equality, access to justice and citizen engagement scored average, the country still fell short in areas that define democratic strength.
International IDEA’s Secretary-General, Kevin Casas-Zamora, described democracy globally as facing its most uncertain period in decades, warning that elections, press freedom and rule of law were under severe strain.
“Representation is the strongest aspect of democracy overall, yet amid an unprecedented 74 national elections in 2024, representation scores collapsed to their worst level in over 20 years,” he said.
The report also revealed that press freedom suffered its steepest decline in 50 years, with 43 countries, including many in Africa, recording setbacks. In West Africa, the decline was linked to coups, political instability and conflicts.
Globally, the rule of law was ranked as the weakest-performing area, with 41 per cent of countries falling into the low-performance category.
International IDEA cautioned that unless urgent reforms are implemented to ensure fairness and inclusion, democracy in countries like Nigeria risks further decline.
