Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on state governors to place greater emphasis on food security as a critical component of their governance agenda.

Obasanjo made this appeal on Wednesday in Sokoto during the unveiling of 136 housing units, purchased at the cost of N1.8 billion by the Sokoto State Government, intended for allocation to low-income earners.

Obasanjo’s visit to Sokoto, which spanned two days, was marked by the inauguration of various projects executed by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, celebrating his administration’s one-year anniversary.

During his speech, the former president underscored the importance of food security, personal health, and overall security, suggesting that these factors are foundational to enhancing the well-being and productivity of the populace.

“Good feeling enhances health and other productive engagements,” Obasanjo noted.

The former president lauded Governor Aliyu’s efforts, commending his achievements in transportation, road construction, agriculture, and housing projects.

Obasanjo described Aliyu as a “leader running a good race,” highlighting his leadership qualities as strong, energetic, and resilient.

He expressed confidence that these efforts would strengthen Aliyu’s chances of future electoral success.

“Your strong, energetic, and resilient qualities in leadership have made you achieve a lot within the span of one year.

Putting all these in place will surely brighten your chances of seeking a future mandate without stress,” Obasanjo said.

Governor Aliyu, in his remarks, reiterated his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises through the implementation of human-oriented projects aimed at improving the welfare and standards of the people in the state.

He outlined ongoing and planned initiatives, including road construction, youth and women empowerment, water supply, and the provision of agricultural inputs for farmers.

Additionally, he emphasized the government’s focus on equipping hospitals and other essential facilities.

“We are determined to continue developing the state for proper repositioning and providing state-of-the-art facilities at all sites, including Islamiyya schools, markets, and playgrounds, among others,” Aliyu said.

He explained that the newly acquired housing units from the Federal Government would be distributed to citizens on an owner-occupier basis to address the growing need for affordable housing in the state.

Aliyu expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for accepting the state’s invitation and being part of the historic event.

The governor assured that his administration would persist in its developmental agenda, ensuring the provision of essential services and infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Sokoto State.
