The Progressives Muslim Clerics in Ogun State have formally inaugurated their leadership and endorsed Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as “Yayi,” as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was made during the group’s Ramadan Lecture in Abeokuta, where Dr. Izhaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, called on Muslims to pray for the nation’s leaders and to prioritize character in choosing political officeholders.
Speaking to newsmen, Salako said: “Our first agenda is to pray for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all leaders working at the federal, state, and local levels for peace and security in Nigeria.
“The second is to reflect on the 2027 political landscape. A leader may be devout, but without good character, faith alone is insufficient.”
Salako praised President Tinubu for stabilizing the naira, reducing inflation, and initiating infrastructure projects across Nigeria.
“In Ogun State, roads like Sagamu and Sogoto-Badagry stand as lasting legacies. The President’s work is for the next 50 years,” he added.
On the state governorship, Salako said: “After careful consideration, Ogun Muslims feel Senator Yayi appeals most to us.
“Though he is a Christian now, he was born a Muslim and has consistently shown fairness and respect to our community. Muslims in Ogun State are comfortable with him, and we are ready to support his aspiration to govern the state in 2027.”
The guest speaker, Ameerul Mufasirin, Sheikh Mulku Sulaimon Mahmoud, urged voters to choose leaders based on competence, honesty, and justice.
He cited Adeola’s contributions to the Muslim community, including sponsoring 280 Muslims to Hajj, distributing 10,000 bags of rice, providing generators to clerics, rebuilding the house of Imam Ado, and funding N75 million for Ilaro Central Mosque.
Other dignitaries at the event included Wakeelu Muslimeen of Yorubaland (Edo and Delta), Sheikh Iskil Lawal, the Aare Adeeni of Ogun State, Senator Lekan Mustapha, former Deputy Governor Alhaji Salmot Badru, and other Islamic leaders.
Wakeelu Muslimeen stressed the need for justice in political representation, insisting the Yewa region deserves the governorship ticket. Senator Mustapha highlighted Adeola’s religious tolerance, noting his unique experience as a Muslim-turned-Christian will help him govern inclusively.
The gathering concluded with a call for Muslims to make decisions guided by experience and capacity, rather than sentiment, affirming unity, faith, and the progress of Ogun State.
