Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stirred controversy, particularly on Twitter, after offering to facilitate talks with the terrorists responsible for the abduction of 287 school children from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in Kaduna State’s Chikun local government area.

In a press statement released by his media team, Gumi reiterated his willingness to facilitate extensive discussions between the federal government and bandits to secure the release of all abducted Nigerian citizens.

He proposed employing a similar approach used to recover passengers kidnapped from the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, 2022.

Gumi urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration not to repeat the alleged mistake made by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who reportedly declined to negotiate with bandits.

Gumi stated, “The government’s stand of no negotiation with the bandits is an unfortunate position.

“My advice is that the government should dialogue with the bandits not only for these Kuriga school children abduction but all the cases.”

Expressing his readiness to lead comprehensive dialogue efforts between the government and bandits, Gumi emphasized the religious duty to pursue peace.

He urged the present administration to heed his call for dialogue, citing the alleged refusal of the previous Buhari administration to engage with bandits.

Gumi’s offer to mediate dialogue with the kidnappers has however,  sparked debates on social media, with opinions divided on the effectiveness and ethical implications of negotiating with terrorists for the release of abducted individuals.
