Protesters Set Ablaze Traditional Ruler’s Residence In Plateau State

Amidst the aftermath of a recent Boko Haram attack in several communities of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, a group of protesting women set fire to the residence of the district head of the affected town, Michael Adanchi. 

The attack left over 100 people dead in 17 villages across Barkin Ladi, Mangu, and Bokkos Local Government Areas on Christmas Eve, displacing more than 10,000 individuals who sought refuge in various places, including churches, mosques, schools, and private residences.

The incident, which occurred around 12.30 pm on Friday, unfolded after the arrest of community members suspected of involvement in the recent killings.

 According to a source, the women, expressing their discontent over the arrests, initially gathered at the police station. 

Subsequently, they proceeded to the traditional ruler’s residence, accusing him of betrayal. Within minutes of reaching the house, they set it ablaze, along with the administrative office.

Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, assured that the command would issue a statement on the matter promptly. The act of arson underscores the heightened tension and frustration within the community.

Earlier reports by PLATFORM TIMES highlighted a fresh threat of attacks on a community in Plateau State on December 29, 2023, just four days after 195 people were killed in 17 communities across the state.

 Stanley Kavwam, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Middle Belt Forum, revealed that terrorists had sent a warning letter regarding an imminent attack on the Pushit community in Mangu Local Government Area.

Addressing the threat, State Police Public Relations Officer Alabo Alfred acknowledged the intelligence and assured that the command was actively working on addressing the situation. 

Residents of Pushit confirmed their awareness of the threat letter, indicating a heightened sense of vigilance within the community amidst the persistent security challenges. 

The incident further underscores the urgent need for effective security measures to safeguard communities facing the looming threat of violence.
