Scores of protesters on Thursday stormed the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, demanding the immediate suspension of the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Fasina, over allegations of sexual harassment.
The demonstrators, under the banner of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption, wielded placards with inscriptions such as “Ekiti Deserves Better” and “Protect Our Women,” insisting that Fasina step aside to allow for an independent investigation.
The embattled VC has been under intense scrutiny following the emergence of a leaked voice note in which he allegedly admitted making romantic advances towards one of his married staff members, Engineer Adebayo Folashade.
The recording, obtained by Sahara Reporters, features a conversation in which Fasina is heard expressing frustration over the public disclosure of their interaction and attempts to downplay the allegations.
Addressing journalists after submitting a petition to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the leader of the protest, Victor Adetola, urged the ministry to act swiftly to preserve the institution’s reputation.
“We have followed the developments at FUOYE, and as an organisation advocating for Nigerian students and the integrity of our education system, we cannot remain silent.
The disciplinary investigation, initially scheduled to conclude within three weeks, has now dragged on for over six months without resolution,” Adetola stated.
He lamented that the issue had been left unresolved, warning that further delays could erode confidence in the university’s administration.
“The governing council’s failure to act decisively on this matter raises serious concerns.
“ We are also disturbed by reports of administrative irregularities and corruption within the university.
It is imperative that the VC either steps aside voluntarily or is suspended to allow for an independent probe into the various petitions against him,” he added.
The protesters submitted their petition to the education ministry, demanding immediate intervention.
They also vowed to escalate their campaign to other relevant agencies, including anti-corruption bodies and human rights organisations, to ensure that justice is served.
“We have made our case clear to the Ministry of Education. But we will not stop here. We will take this matter to other agencies to ensure accountability.
Nigerian universities must be safe spaces for staff and students alike, free from abuse and intimidation,” Adetola declared.
The controversy deepened after Fasina allegedly admitted in a recorded conversation that he made romantic advances towards Adebayo, rationalising his actions while appearing to pressure her into silence.
The leaked audio also suggests discussions about alleged financial improprieties within the institution.
Despite mounting pressure, the university’s management has yet to issue an official response to the allegations or the protests.
However, calls for Fasina’s suspension are growing louder, with stakeholders urging the government to prioritise transparency and accountability in handling the case.
