In a bid to combat the declining interest in reading among students, Dr. Rafiu Adekola Soyele, the Provost of the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, has called on the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Ogun State Chapter, to establish a “Young Writers Club” in primary and secondary schools.
During a meeting with executive members of ANA Ogun, Dr. Soyele emphasized the importance of catching students at a young age to instill the fundamentals of professional reading and writing.
He believes that this initiative will not only nurture essential skills for effective communication but also contribute to the overall improvement of the teaching profession.
Expressing concern over the recent decline in student enrollment in Colleges of Education nationwide, Dr. Soyele attributed this trend to socio-cultural pressures and vices that distract youngsters from pursuing education.
He stressed the significance of maintaining a strong reading culture, stating, “We must not jettison books! Libraries must flourish!”
As the sixth Provost of FCE, Abeokuta, and the first alumnus to lead the institution, Dr. Soyele commended the College’s growth since its establishment in 1976.
He pledged support for ANA’s efforts and expressed excitement about upcoming projects, including the commissioning of FCE Radio during the forthcoming Convocation Ceremony.
In response, Dr. Chris Omotosho, Chairman of ANA Ogun, highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to enhance the reading culture in society and expand knowledge.
The courtesy visit included the Vice Chairman, Chief Abiodun Lasile, Mr. Femi Sanyaolu, General Secretary, and the PRO, Pastor Dare Folarin.
