A 32-year-old man masquerading as a medical doctor has been apprehended in Ororuwo town, Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State, following the tragic death of a pregnant woman under his care.
The suspect, Oladiti Saheed, who had been operating without the necessary qualifications for over six years, was taken into custody by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According to Dr. Akintayo Adaralewa, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Saheed’s highest educational attainment was a Secondary School Certificate, yet he had been running a makeshift clinic in the community.
The unfortunate incident occurred when the deceased, nine months and three weeks pregnant, sought medical attention at Saheed’s facility on April 15.
Dr. Adaralewa disclosed that the victim, facing challenges at her previous healthcare provider, turned to Saheed’s clinic.
Tragically, after being attended to by Saheed, she developed complications during labor and was rushed to another hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Further investigation uncovered Saheed’s involvement in training individuals to become quack doctors for a fee of N5,000.
It was also revealed that he operated without any registered medical personnel, employing six unqualified staff members.
Saheed admitted to attending to numerous pregnant women over the years and charged N30,000 per delivery.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) expressed dismay over the prevalence of quackery in the country’s healthcare system.
Dr. Adedapo Adetoye, Chairman of NMA, Osun State, condemned the incident, emphasizing the dangers posed by unqualified practitioners.
He commended the NSCDC for the arrest and urged the public to verify the authenticity of healthcare facilities by requesting registration numbers.
The arrest of Saheed underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations and increased vigilance in the healthcare sector to prevent further tragedies caused by quackery.
The NMA reaffirmed its commitment to combating this menace and ensuring the delivery of safe and competent medical services to all citizens.
