RAAMP Urges Govt to Prioritize Effective Communication To Combat Food Insecurity

The National Coordinator of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), Engr. Aminu Bodinga Mohammed, has stressed the critical role of effective communication in addressing food insecurity and ensuring the success of government programs.

He submitted  that strategic dissemination of information is vital for building public trust and fostering support for government policies.

Speaking during the opening of a five-day capacity-building training in Calabar, Cross River State, Mohammed, represented by the Cross River State Coordinator, Henry Tawo, stressed the importance of equipping government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) with the necessary tools and skills to enhance their communication strategies.

He called for continuous learning and adaptation to meet the evolving challenges of effectively conveying government initiatives to the public.

“One of the reasons why government is not trusted by the people is the lack of effective strategies for disseminating information,” Mohammed said.

“For us in RAAMP, we recognize the need to learn, unlearn, and relearn to ensure successful project delivery. Engaging opinion leaders and gatekeepers is crucial in driving home government policies.”

The training session, which brought together Development Communication Officers, Management Information Officers, and other key RAAMP staff, also featured a presentation by Dr. Okpanachi Yalo, a lecturer from the University of Calabar. Dr. Yalo addressed the persistent issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, attributing it to factors such as social insecurity and the lack of agricultural mechanization.

“Participants agreed that corruption has been a major obstacle to achieving food security,” Dr. Yalo stated.

“As communication managers of RAAMP, it is essential to tell your story and retell it for maximum impact.

Government information handlers must stay ahead in their knowledge and strategies to effectively inform the public”.
