A powerful rainstorm has wreaked havoc in Imeko, Ogun State, leaving a trail of destruction that has rendered numerous residents homeless and caused extensive damage to properties worth millions of naira.
The storm, which struck the ancient town and its environs, uprooted trees, tore off rooftops, and collapsed walls, forcing families to flee their homes in search of safety.
The affected areas include Kongo, Lafenwa/Surulere, Kogo Road, Obolo Road, Idi-Oro, Area 5 Junction Lafenwa, Oke Igbere, Secretariat Road, Obatedo, Araromi Street, Loye Street, Odi-Olowo, among others.
Among the victims is Pastor Olugbile Israel Adebayo of The Christ Preachers Bible Church, Jesutedo Kongo Imeko, whose church building collapsed during the storm.
While reacting, the pastor said “rebuilding will be a significant financial burden.”.
Mrs. Gloria Babatunde, another affected resident, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the cost of repairing her damaged home and business premises would be overwhelming.
In response to the disaster, the Executive Chairman of Imeko-Afon Local Government, Hon. Theophilus Olorode, visited the affected communities to assess the damage and console the victims.
He emphasized the need for a sensitization campaign to educate residents on the importance of afforestation as a natural barrier against future storms.
Hon. Olorode assured the victims that his administration would collaborate with both federal and state governments, particularly under the proactive leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, to seek assistance and relief materials to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
He also urged residents to avoid living in dilapidated buildings and to report any structurally defective structures to the appropriate authorities to prevent loss of lives and properties during such natural disasters.
The assessment visit was attended by top political functionaries and members of the public within the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area.
