The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that a devastating rainstorm wreaked havoc in the Iresa Apa Community of Surulere Local Government Area, Oyo State, displacing approximately 1,300 residents and causing extensive destruction to properties valued at millions of Naira.

According to NEMA’s statement issued on Wednesday, the rainstorm disaster, which struck on Monday, inflicted severe damage across six communities in Irasepa, Surulere LGA, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The assessment conducted by NEMA, in collaboration with Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) and local government representatives on Tuesday, revealed the dire situation faced by affected residents.

The agency’s Southwest officials, led by AZC NEMA SW Olanrewaju Kazeem, were warmly received by Surulere LGA Chairman, Hon. Isaiah Adegbite, who provided crucial insights into the extent of the disaster.

During the assessment, it was observed that the rainstorm had decimated numerous properties and livelihoods, including shops and schools, resulting in significant displacement and disruption for the affected communities.

The estimated number of individuals impacted by the disaster stands at approximately 1,300.

Expressing sympathy and solidarity with the affected community, NEMA officials reiterated their commitment to providing support and relief efforts to alleviate the plight of the displaced residents.

The agency’s swift response underscores its dedication to addressing humanitarian crises and assisting vulnerable populations during times of need.
