The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old businessman, Alhaji Nuru Isah, for allegedly beating his 24-year-old wife, Wasila Abdullahi, to death following a dispute over food meant for breaking the Ramadan fast.
The tragic incident occurred late on Friday near Government Girls College, Fadamam, Mada Area, Bauchi, throwing the community into shock.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Wakil, said the altercation stemmed from a misunderstanding over how food ingredients and fruits for Iftar (the evening meal to break Ramadan fast) were being handled.
“On March 1, 2025, at about 11:30 PM, the Bauchi State Police Command was alerted to an alleged culpable homicide incident near Government Girls College, Fadamam Mada Area, Bauchi,” Wakil said.
“This unfortunate event arose from a misunderstanding between one Alhaji Nuru Isah, aged 50, a businessman at Central Market, Bauchi, and his second wife, Wasila Abdullahi, aged 24, concerning handling food ingredients and fruits designated for breaking the Ramadan fast, which escalated into a violent confrontation.”
According to police findings, what started as a disagreement quickly turned violent. In a fit of rage, Isah allegedly picked up a cane and repeatedly struck Abdullahi. She collapsed moments later.
Neighbours and family members rushed her to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH) in a desperate attempt to save her life.
However, medical personnel at the hospital confirmed her death upon arrival.
The police spokesperson noted that Isah was immediately taken into custody as investigations into the incident commenced.
Reacting to the tragic event, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Muhammad, assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated and justice served.
“This incident is deeply concerning, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, a period meant for peace, reflection, and spiritual growth,” Muhammad stated.
“We want to assure the public that justice will be done, and we urge everyone to allow the law to take its course.”
The Commissioner also emphasized the need for peaceful conflict resolution within households and urged residents to avoid resorting to violence, particularly during sensitive periods such as Ramadan.
Some residents condemned the act, calling for stricter measures against perpetrators of gender-based violence.
A resident of the area, Ibrahim Musa, described the event as “horrific and unfortunate.”
“This is a sad reality we must confront. No one deserves to lose their life over something as basic as food. This is not the first time we have seen such cases of domestic violence escalate to this level,” Musa said.
Human rights activists in the state have also called for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women from domestic abuse.
Domestic violence remains a pressing issue in Nigeria, with numerous cases of spousal abuse reported across the country.
Experts have consistently advocated for increased awareness, legal action, and societal intervention to curb gender-based violence.
The Bauchi State Police Command has urged the public to report any cases of domestic abuse, reiterating its commitment to addressing such incidents decisively.
Meanwhile, Isah remains in police custody as authorities continue investigations into the case.
