The Nigerian Red Cross Society has raised a fresh alarm that no fewer than 33 million Nigerians may be pushed into acute hunger and malnutrition in 2026 unless urgent interventions are implemented.
Secretary-General of the organisation, Dr. Abubakar Kende, issued the warning on Friday in Abuja during the unveiling of the Red Cross Nutrition Advocacy Plan, a new framework aimed at intensifying national efforts against food insecurity.
Kende said worsening economic hardship, climate-induced food shortages, and rising insecurity across food-producing regions were deepening the risk of hunger for millions.
He stressed that coordinated action from government, humanitarian agencies and private-sector partners had become critical to prevent the looming crisis.
“The plan sets the tone for impactful action against hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria. With the support of our partners and our nutrition ambassador, we hope to make a significant difference,” he stated.
The event also featured the conferment of Nutrition Ambassador on philanthropist Ambassador Layla Ali Othman, whom the Red Cross described as a strong supporter of its humanitarian drives.
Kende expressed optimism that Othman’s involvement would boost advocacy, visibility and mobilisation for the Society’s anti-hunger programmes.
“We are grateful for the commitment shown by individuals like Ambassador Othman. Their support reassures us that the fight against hunger can be won,” he added.
In her remarks, Othman thanked the Society for the recognition and pledged to use her influence to champion improved nutrition and food support for vulnerable communities.
The Red Cross said its new advocacy plan will drive nationwide campaigns, policy engagement and multi-sector partnerships aimed at reducing hunger levels, especially among children, pregnant women and internally displaced persons.
